|What program do you use to create your artwork?|
I use Photoshop CS5 with my WACOM intuos3 tablet. A lot of my work is pencil illustrations scanned into the computer and then painted in Photoshop digitally - other times it's purely Photoshop painting.
Do you prefer working traditionally or digitally?
I like to mix it up between the two all the time. I like the feel of traditional sketching and will often finish a traditional piece with the digital process in mind - hence why I have a lot of work in progress pieces in the works on my computer!
How long have you been drawing?
Pretty much my entire life - since I could hold a pencil.
Did you get any special art education?
Yes, growing up in Perth, WA, I went to Applecross SHS. A special art school with an art program which meant I went to school on Saturday mornings to study traditional painting, sculpture, screen printing and more. Really just touched on a lot of different things but if you're interested you can see more of them in my Scraps section here: lordnetsua.deviantart.com/gall…
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Life. Everything is an inspiration and influence in some way - nature, music, friends, games, films, other artist's, pop culture. The list is endless!
But why do you love drawing monsters so much?
As a kid I think a huge inspiration on me was the protagonists of the film Small Soldiers. The Gorgonites were the monsters and creatures - but instead of having them as the villians they were the friendly and diverse bunch of character and creature designs that really struck home with me. I watched the film countless times - drawing the characters over and over until I got them right. Huge inspiration to me as a kid!
I also think movies like Shaun of the Dead, which was one of the first horror movies I saw back in the day - really influenced my enjoyment of the juxtaposition of comedy and horror - which is notable in a lot of my pieces.
Do you have any favourite artists?
I sure do! You can check them out under "Interests" on my deviantART profile, or look at my art page's liked pages on Facebook. here are a selection of some of them:
Brad Rigney (CryptCrawler), Jeff Simpson (jeffsimpsonkh) Beksinski, Chris Newman (Viviphyd), Dan LuVisi (adonihs), A. Hutt (Smirtouille), Luke Mancini (Mr--Jack), Anthony Jones, Axel Torvenius, Brad Wright, Dave Rapoza,
Where can I buy your artwork on prints, t-shirts, phone covers and everything else?
My Society6 Store store has pretty much all of that!
I'll also always announce whenever there is a FREE shipping and $5 off each item deal available on my Facebook Page, so be sure to follow me on that for all the best savings!
Do you do requests? Can you work on this project of mine for free?
You're more than welcome to post a suggestion or request on the Facebook page or in a comment - always interesting to hear what people are after.
And as for working for free - I'm getting to the age and stage where doing client work for purely experience is behind me now. I'm trying to focus on larger projects and approach bigger clients these days - plus I'm pretty busy this year already with my convention schedule.
How about a commission?
As I'm pretty tied up with managing current commission work, conventions to prepare for, art study, and quite a long backlog of work to follow up on - I currently can't accept any new commissions.
Best thing to do, providing your project doesn't have an urgent deadline - email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know what you're after. We might be able to figure something out in future!
Which convention will you be attending next?
To see the full list of my conventions this year, check out my blog post about it here: lordnetsua.deviantart.com/jour…
Will you ever be going to conventions outside Australia?
Yes! Hopefully in future!
Can I buy an original pencil or ink sketch from you?
At this moment, no, but it is something I'm working on implementing in future. Will keep you updated.
What's happening with you graphic novel project "EXECUTION"?
I've put EXECUTION on hold indefinitely as I feel like I've matured a lot since creating it 4 years ago now. I've got a lot planned for it, such as incorporating Survivor Slayer and other creatures of mine in it - but I'm still treading water with a lot of ideas to get out through it. I want it to be the best thing I can do, so until I know exactly what direction I'm taking it in it will remain as it is.
I do however want to release the full graphic novel version as it is in physical copy online sometime soon. Will keep you posted.
Why don't you release more YouTube videos or tutorials?
This is something I'm working on but really, I just can't find the time. I've got a backlog of speed paintings and process videos to edit and put up so will get onto it asap. Sorry! I'm not Wonder Woman!
Why are you spending so much time on this F.A.Q?
Mostly because I get asked these questions a lot and I need somewhere to direct people - but also cause I should be working on something else right now! Okay, that's it for now. Hope that clears some things up.
Cheers guys and thanks so much for the continued support. Take it easy,
